Purpose of the article – the paper examines the revitalisation of historic buildings, focusing on financial sustainability, community involvement, and regional development beyond mere technical renovation.
Research methodology – the study combines a review of domestic and international literature with a qualitative analysis of good practices, focusing on funding models, tourism integration, public-private partnerships, community roles, and digital technologies.
Findings – the research shows that project success relies on diversified funding, strategic content planning, and the development of viable business models that combine public and private resources. Active community involvement and the use of digital tools—such as augmented reality—are also crucial in enhancing the appeal and long-term use of revitalised heritage sites.
Practical implications – the findings provide recommendations for policymakers, heritage managers, and other stakeholders. Key suggestions include establishing a clear legal framework for public-private partnerships, offering financial incentives, promoting digital tools, and implementing targeted marketing strategies to transform abandoned heritage into vibrant community hubs.
Originality/value – the paper combines international best practices with the Slovenian context to propose innovative and sustainable revitalisation approaches. It offers a comprehensive perspective on cultural heritage as a catalyst for local identity, social cohesion, and long-term regional development.
